چکیده

We studied the reproductive ecology of the Ringed Warbling-Finch Poospiza torquata and the Cinnamon Warbling-Finch P. ornata during four breeding seasons in the Reserve of Ñacuñán, western Argentina. We described the breeding biology of both species, examined temporal variation in reproductive parameters under contrasting weather conditions, and compared reproductive traits of these sympatric Poospiza species to evaluate if differences in food supply and nest predation between species are responsible for striking differences in reproductive ecology. Nests and nest sites were similar in both species. Timing of breeding varied among years in both species, especially in the Cinnamon Warbling-Finch which only bred in substantial numbers during the wet 1997-98 season. Laying dates also differed between species in 1997-98. Clutch size and egg volume did not differ among years for the Ringed Warbling-Finch. Within the breeding season, clutch size remained constant in both species, and Ringed Warbling-Finch egg volume was positively correlated with laying date. In 1997-98, clutch size was larger in the Cinnamon Warbling-Finch, but relative egg mass of the Ringed Warbling-Finch was greater than that of the Cinnamon Warbling-Finch. Nestling growth patterns were similar for both species. Both species suffered similar and very high rates of nest predation, and daily survival rate of nests did not differ among years or within the breeding season. Our results suggest that interspecific differences in reproductive traits, in particular the unreliable breeding of the Cinnamon Warbling-Finch at Ñacuñán, may be an evolutionary response to different energetic (food) limitations suffered by these congeneric bird species.

Foraging behavior and diet of the vulnerable Cinereous Warbling-finch Poospiza cinerea (Aves, Emberizidae).

The Cinereous Warbling-finch Poospiza cinerea is a globally vulnerable Emberizidae passerine, patchily distributed and rare in the open savannah of central South America. Attributes of rare species include niche specificity such as feeding habits. To verify possible niche specialization in this species we aimed to describe its foraging habits related to substrate use, foraging and substrate hei...

A molecular phylogeny of warbling-finches (Poospiza): paraphyly in a neotropical Emberizid genus.

We investigated the phylogenetic relationships of 12 species within a single genus of neotropical passerine (Poospiza) using 849 bp (283 codons) of the cytochrome b mitochondrial gene. We further explored evolutionary affinities of these taxa using sequence from an additional 47 thraupine (tanagers) and 7 emberizine (sparrows and buntings) genera, members of the predominantly New World family E...

Ultraconserved Elements Sequencing as a Low-Cost Source of Complete Mitochondrial Genomes and Microsatellite Markers in Non-Model Amniotes

Sequence capture of ultraconserved elements (UCEs) associated with massively parallel sequencing has become a common source of nuclear data for studies of animal systematics and phylogeography. However, mitochondrial and microsatellite variation are still commonly used in various kinds of molecular studies, and probably will complement genomic data in years to come. Here we show that besides pr...

New insights on the rarity of the vulnerable Cinereous Warbling-finch (Aves, Emberizidae) based on density, home range, and habitat selection.

The Cinereous Warbling-finch Poospiza cinerea (Emberizidae) is a Neotropical grassland bird considered rare, with population declining due to habitat loss and classified as vulnerable. However, the species conspicuously remains in several degraded areas, suggesting that it may be favored by these environments. Studies which focus on this species were inexistent until 2012, making questionable a...
